The Texas Thyme Unit (TTU) of the Herb Society of America (HSA) is a very special group in Huntsville. They maintain the gardens at the Wynne Home Arts Center where they hold their monthly meetings, and their annual herb festival each spring.
“The knowledge, use, and delight of herbs through education, research, member interactions and community partnerships” is the stated mission of HSA, established in 1933.
Their organization educates people about growing, cultivating, and preserving herbs to create delicious food and natural medicine. Many are Master Gardeners, and most are wonderful cooks.
On Thursday, Sept. 19, some of their most knowledgeable members will share their first hand knowledge on Cooking with Herbs. A reception with light refreshments will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Wynne Home, with speakers to follow in the main gallery.
From the desk of Maryann Readal, Vice President of TTU:
“Do you ever get tired of cooking the same old thing in the same old way? Come to the Wynne Home to get some fresh ideas for adding herbs to your menus. Members of The Herb Society of America’s Texas Thyme Unit will talk about herbs and how to use them to add extra flavor to your meals. By using fresh herbs you are not only adding flavor, you are also adding natural vitamins and minerals to what you eat. Who doesn’t like that idea?
Whether you have a small yard or a large one or can only garden in containers, you can easily grow herbs. Herbs have been around since before man walked the earth and they have learned to adapt to many growing conditions. They are easy to grow plants! You will learn about some herbs that grow well in our Huntsville area and what foods go well with them. You will learn how easy it is to make a delicious and healthy pesto with different herbs. And then you can sample some foods made with locally grown herbs. You can also take home some recipes to begin your journey toward creating exciting and healthy meals.
The Texas Thyme Unit is a part of The Herb Society of America. The group planned, installed, and maintains the Ella Ruth Herb Garden, the Children’s Sensory Garden, and the Rose Garden at the back of the Wynne Home Arts Center. The gardens are overflowing with herbs, with many that grow throughout the year. The gardens are open to the public daily, and all are invited to come and explore, take photos and get inspired with ideas for your own garden.”
Their herb for the month of September is garlic. For more information about the herb, visit the Herb of the Month webpage and the HSA Blog at www.herbsociety.org/hsa-learn/herb-information/herb-of-the-month.html
